# [Essential Networking Tools Every Sysadmin Should Have](http://itlad.uk/blog/essential-networking-tools-sysadmin)

  [networking](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:networking#body-wrapper) [tools](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:tools#body-wrapper) [sysadmin](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:sysadmin#body-wrapper) [cable testing](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:cable%20testing#body-wrapper) [hardware](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:hardware#body-wrapper)

Some of these live in my go-bag. Some run on a laptop. All of them have saved time at some point.

## Physical Tools

### Cable Tester

A [network cable tester](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rj45%2Bcable%2Btester%2Bnetwork&tag=itlad-21) takes five seconds and tells you whether a cable has a wiring fault, a broken pin or a crossed pair. Buy one. Stop guessing whether the cable is the problem.

### Punch-Down Tool and Keystone Jacks

If you run cable, you need a [punch-down tool](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=punch%2Bdown%2Btool%2Bcat6&tag=itlad-21). The impact type is faster than manual. Keep a stock of [Cat6 keystone jacks](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=cat6%2Bkeystone%2Bjack%2Bbulk&tag=itlad-21) — you'll always need more than you think.

### Wi-Fi Analyzer (Phone App + Hardware)

For Wi-Fi troubleshooting, start with a free app like WiFi Analyzer on Android. For serious RF work, a [USB Wi-Fi adapter with monitor mode](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=alfa%2Bawus036ach%2Bwifi%2Badapter&tag=itlad-21) — the Alfa AWUS036ACH is the standard — opens up packet capture and channel analysis that a phone can't do.

## Software Tools

### Nmap

Still the best network scanner after 25 years. Scan your subnet, enumerate open ports, detect OS versions:

```bash
nmap -sV -O 192.168.1.0/24
```

Run it against your own network monthly. You'll find devices you forgot you added.

### Wireshark

Packet capture and analysis. When something behaves wrong at layer 2 or 3, Wireshark shows you exactly what's on the wire. The display filter syntax takes an hour to learn and saves days of guessing.

### NetBox (Self-Hosted)

If you run a homelab with more than ten devices, document it. NetBox tracks IP assignments, VLANs, rack layouts and cable paths. Run it as a Docker container and keep it updated — future you will be grateful.

### iperf3

Tests actual bandwidth between two points on your network. Paste this on two machines:

```bash
# Server:
iperf3 -s
# Client:
iperf3 -c 192.168.1.x
```

If your 2.5GbE switch says 2.5Gbps but iperf3 shows 800Mbps, you found a bottleneck.

## The Go-Bag Minimum

Keep these in a small bag near your patch panel:

- Cable tester
- Short patch cables (3x 0.5m, 3x 1m)
- USB-to-RJ45 adapter
- Punch-down tool
- 6-port keystone patch panel offcut for testing
- [Fluke Networks toner/probe kit](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=network%2Bcable%2Btoner%2Btracer%2Bkit&tag=itlad-21) for tracing unlabeled runs
