# [Best Budget Network Switches for Your Homelab in 2026](http://itlad.uk/blog/budget-network-switches-homelab)

  [network switch](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:network%20switch#body-wrapper) [homelab](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:homelab#body-wrapper) [networking](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:networking#body-wrapper) [managed switch](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:managed%20switch#body-wrapper) [VLAN](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:VLAN#body-wrapper)

An unmanaged switch is fine for connecting a handful of devices. The moment you want VLANs, port-based traffic segmentation, or link aggregation, you need managed. These are the switches worth your money under $150.

## TP-Link TL-SG108E (8-Port, ~$30)

The cheapest way to get VLAN support on a switch. 802.1Q VLANs, port mirroring, bandwidth control — all managed via a web UI. Fanless, compact, runs warm but fine.

One caveat: the management interface runs over HTTP with no HTTPS option. Keep it on a management VLAN that you control.

## TP-Link TL-SG116E (16-Port, ~$60)

Same platform as the SG108E but with 16 ports and metal housing. If your homelab patch panel has more than eight connections, start here rather than buying two 8-port switches and stacking them.

## Netgear GS308E (8-Port, ~$40)

More polished management software than the TP-Link. The Netgear Insight app covers VLAN config and port monitoring from a mobile device. Slightly more expensive but the UI is less frustrating.

## MikroTik CSS326-24G-2S+RM (24-Port Rack, ~$120)

If you're building a proper rack and want enterprise features without Cisco prices, MikroTik delivers. 24 gigabit ports, 2 SFP+ uplinks, full 802.1Q VLAN support, RSTP, LACP. Managed via the SwOS web UI or Winbox.

The learning curve is steeper than TP-Link — MikroTik assumes you know what you're doing. Worth it for a rack build.

## What to Actually Buy

- **1–8 devices, no VLANs needed** — Unmanaged TP-Link TL-SG108 (~$20)
- **VLANs, under 8 ports** — TP-Link TL-SG108E (~$30)
- **VLANs, 9–16 ports** — TP-Link TL-SG116E (~$60)
- **Rack mount, 24 ports** — MikroTik CSS326 (~$120)

Avoid switches marketed as "smart managed" from no-name brands. VLAN implementation quality varies wildly, and firmware updates vanish after 18 months.
