USB hubs are one of those things where cheap ones cause weird problems. Intermittent disconnects, devices that won't enumerate, charging that cuts out — usually traceable to an underpowered or poorly shielded hub. Buy the right one once.

## Anker 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub with Power Adapter (~$40)

Ten ports, 60W external power supply, backwards compatible with USB 2.0. Powers bus-hungry devices — external SSDs, RFID readers, USB-to-serial adapters — without brownouts.

Good for a desk with a desktop tower that needs more ports than the back panel offers.

## CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock (~$280)

The CalDigit TS4 is the dock I'd buy if I used a laptop as my primary machine. 18 ports total, 98W laptop charging, dual 4K@60Hz display output, 2.5GbE built in. Everything connects with one cable to the laptop.

Expensive. Justified if you plug and unplug a laptop from a desk daily.

## Plugable 11-in-1 USB-C Hub (~$50)

For laptops without Thunderbolt, the Plugable USB-C hub covers the basics: dual HDMI, USB-A x4, SD card, microSD, 100W passthrough charging. Compact enough to travel.

## Sabrent Rocket 4-Port USB 3.2 Hub (~$15)

When you just need a few extra USB-A ports at the back of a server or beside a KVM, this does the job without a power brick. Not for bus-powered SSDs, fine for keyboards, mice, USB drives.

## What to Avoid

**Unbranded hubs from generic Amazon storefronts.** They often use a single USB 2.0 controller shared across all ports, regardless of what the listing says. Plug in two USB 3.0 devices and they fight for the same bandwidth.

Check reviews specifically for USB 3.0 device enumeration issues. If people report "device not recognized" with SSDs, skip it.

## For IT Work Specifically

If you connect to serial consoles, network gear or embedded systems, get a [USB-to-serial hub with individual port isolation](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=usb%2Bto%2Bserial%2Bhub%2B4%2Bport&tag=itlad-21). FTDI chips are more reliable than CH340/CH341 clones for lab work where you're connecting to switches and routers.
