# [AI Tools I Actually Use as a Sysadmin in 2026](http://itlad.uk/blog/ai-tools-sysadmin-2026)

 By [IT Lad](http://itlad.uk/about) 22 May 2026

  [ai](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:ai#body-wrapper) [sysadmin](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:sysadmin#body-wrapper) [automation](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:automation#body-wrapper) [llm](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:llm#body-wrapper) [productivity](http://itlad.uk/blog/tag:productivity#body-wrapper)

AI in IT has two modes: genuinely useful and massively overhyped. Here's where it lands in my actual workflow.

## Ollama — Local LLM for Everything Private

Ollama runs large language models on your own hardware. I use it for:

- Writing one-off scripts (Bash, Python, PowerShell) from a description
- Explaining unfamiliar log output or error messages
- Drafting documentation from rough notes

The models I keep loaded: **Llama 3.1 8B** for fast queries, **Qwen2.5-Coder 14B** for code tasks, **Mistral 7B** when I want a second opinion.

Setup takes ten minutes on any machine with 16GB RAM. A dedicated GPU speeds up inference significantly — the [NVIDIA RTX 3060 12GB](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=nvidia%2Brtx%2B3060%2B12gb&tag=itlad-21) handles 13B models at usable speed.

## Claude / ChatGPT — For Tasks That Need Reasoning

When I need multi-step reasoning — designing a network architecture, reviewing a firewall ruleset for gaps, debugging a complex Ansible playbook — I use Claude or GPT-4o. Local models at 7–13B can't match the reasoning depth here yet.

## Fabric — AI Pipeline for the Terminal

[Fabric](https://github.com/danielmiessler/fabric) is a command-line tool that pipes text through AI prompts. My daily use: pipe a log file through a "summarize errors" prompt, or pipe a long config into a "spot the security issues" pattern.

```bash
cat /var/log/syslog | fabric --pattern analyze_logs
```

It connects to Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible API.

## n8n — Workflow Automation with AI Steps

n8n is a self-hosted automation tool with an AI agent node. I use it for:

- Parsing alert emails and creating tickets automatically
- Summarizing monitoring alerts before they hit my phone
- Pulling data from APIs and formatting it into reports

Run it as a Docker container. The [n8n + Ollama combo](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mini%2Bpc%2Bhomelab%2Bautomation%2Bserver&tag=itlad-21) on a mini PC handles all of this offline.

## Where AI Wastes My Time

Asking AI to diagnose production outages in real time. It hallucinates plausible-sounding but wrong command flags. For live troubleshooting, documentation and man pages are still faster. AI is a draft tool, not an oracle.

## The Hardware Minimum for Local AI

- **16GB RAM** — runs 7B models in CPU mode
- **32GB RAM + RTX 3060 12GB** — runs 13B models fast enough to be useful
- **64GB RAM + RTX 4070** — runs 34B models, covers most tasks without cloud APIs

The [Kingston Fury 32GB DDR4 kit](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=kingston%2Bfury%2B32gb%2Bddr4%2Bram&tag=itlad-21) is the upgrade I'd make first if you're RAM-limited.
